Your data & privacy

Plain language, no fine print. The journal lives only on your device, and we store nothing about your child.

The journal is on your device only

Everything you write in the journal lives only in this browser, on this device. There is no account and no sign-in for the journal, and it is never synced, backed up, or sent to our servers or anyone else's. We do not have a copy of your journal or of anything you record about your child. You can export a printable report yourself, and clearing your browser data clears the journal.

We don't use your data for research

Recursive Love does not collect or use your journal, your patterns, or anything about your child for research, and there is no research opt-in.

The AI Companion & note-reading

When you chat with the Companion, or ask it to turn written notes into a journal entry, that text is sent to our AI provider, Anthropic, to generate the response, then returned to you. We do not store your messages on our servers, and your text is not used to train the AI.

  • Please don't enter identifying details— your child's name, your name, your address, school, or clinic. You don't need them to get help, and leaving them out keeps the exchange private.
  • The AI is general support, not medical, legal, or therapeutic advice, and it can be wrong. Always use your own judgment and a qualified professional for real decisions.
  • It cannot handle emergencies. If someone may be in danger, call or text 988 (US Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) or call 911.

The community (optional)

The community is separate from the journal and optional. If you choose to join it, you sign in with an email link and pick a nickname; we never ask for your real name. What you post in a community space is visible to other members by design, so don't share anything you wouldn't want seen. You can delete your community account at any time.

Who helps us run the service

We use a small number of trusted providers to operate the site, and only share what each needs to do its job. We never sell your data.

  • Anthropic — the AI that powers the Companion and note-reading (receives only the text you send it).
  • Supabase — secure database & email sign-in for the optional community.
  • Email provider — sends community sign-in links and, if you turn them on, reminder nudges.
  • Vercel — hosting and privacy-friendly, cookieless web analytics.

For general traffic stats we use Vercel Web Analytics, which is cookieless and aggregate — it counts things like page views and rough device type. It does not use tracking cookies, does not build a profile of you, and is never tied to your journal.

Reminders (optional)

If you turn on reminder notifications, your device registers a notification token so we can send a gentle nudge to log a moment. That token carries no journal content and nothing about your child. Turning reminders off removes it.

About children's information

Recursive Love is intended for adults 18 and older and is not directed to children. We don't knowingly collect personal information directly from a child. The journal is for a parent or caregiver to record their own observations, and it stays on their device. If you believe a child signed up for the community, email us and we'll remove the account.

Questions or requests

Have a question, or want a community account deleted? Email recursivelove@proton.me. If a data breach ever affected information we hold, we'll notify affected people as required by law. You can also read the Terms of Service and the community guidelines.
